If the dogs nails get too long, they can loop around causing great pain for the dog to walk with them like that, and they can eventually start growing back into the pad of the dog's paw.Why do you need to cut dogs nails?
Not only can they grow into their paws if left unchecked, they can also become brittle and split, revealing the quick and leaving an opening for infection.
If you aren't comfortable doing this, it only costs like $10 at PetsMart and you don't need an appointment, they accept walk-ins for that.
Also, a nice walk on the pavement every day is generally enough to file them down and keep them healthy too and clip less often, or with some dogs not at all.
Well I have had dogs that never needed their nails clipped since they were outside a lot their nails filed down naturally from walking on the concrete ETC. But most dogs, especially ones that are kept indoors most of the time, need nail trims because if you do not trim at least once a month, their nails would eventually curl around back into their toes resulting in an ingrown toenail, which is very painful. Besides the obvious health reasons it also looks better to have a neatly groomed dog or puppy!!
the nails will continue to grow.. at some point the dog cannot walk comfortably.. and then the nails begin to curl under the foot and can actually begin to curl upward and into the paw pad.
Nails need to be kept trimmed somehow.. either by trimming them.. or keeping the dog active on hard surfaces to wear the nails down.
If a dog does not wear his nails down on a hard surface the nails can grow around an pierce his pads or cause the toes to spread out painfully. As in this link, I don't cut, I use a Dremel when my dogs need a trim.

when their nails are long, they may also snag on things and sometimes rip the nail right off.

If your piggie has light coloured nails, its not a hard job. If they are black, it is more difficult, especially for a first time piggie owner cutting nails for the first time.
Assuming your piggie has light coloured nails, use the ';Heather's Handy Pig Hold'; at the bottom of this article. Using human toenail clippers, clip the nail just in front of the quick. You will be able to see it through the nail. It is red/pink.

True, bunny clippers are easier and more efficient--and a little less likely to cut the 'quick'--but in a pinch, regular ones are fine =).
You can %26amp; I have, but I eventually picked up a pair of nailclippers designed to be used on cats. The handles are like scissors, but the ';blades'; have a round notch cut out which fits around the nail. I definetly prefer 'em to regular nail clippers %26amp; they just cost a few dollars.
Yes you can definitely use a regular pair of nail clippers. We find that toe nail clippers which are a little larger tend to work a little better. They seem to cut a little more clean than the regular clippers.
yeah...but always make sure that when trimming the nails of any animal, make sure that you do not trim to close to the foot, as claws of most animals have a vein (called the quick, and is quite visible when looking at the claw, it looks like a darkish area inside the nail.) inside it for about a quarter of the length of the nails itslef....and cutting this may result in dangerous levels of blood loss...the best thing to do is to have some flour or other agent that will cake to the wound, this will actually stop the bleeding quite quickly.
any clippers can be used to trim the claws back, just be careful how much you cut off and you n your bunny should be fine..its usually good to have one person hold the animal while the other person clips. this way no one will get injured including th bunny

True, bunny clippers are easier and more efficient--and a little less likely to cut the 'quick'--but in a pinch, regular ones are fine =).

You can %26amp; I have, but I eventually picked up a pair of nailclippers designed to be used on cats. The handles are like scissors, but the ';blades'; have a round notch cut out which fits around the nail. I definetly prefer 'em to regular nail clippers %26amp; they just cost a few dollars.
Yes you can definitely use a regular pair of nail clippers. We find that toe nail clippers which are a little larger tend to work a little better. They seem to cut a little more clean than the regular clippers.
yeah...but always make sure that when trimming the nails of any animal, make sure that you do not trim to close to the foot, as claws of most animals have a vein (called the quick, and is quite visible when looking at the claw, it looks like a darkish area inside the nail.) inside it for about a quarter of the length of the nails itslef....and cutting this may result in dangerous levels of blood loss...the best thing to do is to have some flour or other agent that will cake to the wound, this will actually stop the bleeding quite quickly.
any clippers can be used to trim the claws back, just be careful how much you cut off and you n your bunny should be fine..its usually good to have one person hold the animal while the other person clips. this way no one will get injured including th bunny

Tips for making your nails more resilient:
Stop using a nail clipper and only use a nail file to shape and shorten them. Protect nails with thicker moisturizers.
Nail clippers can cause the layers of the nail to separate and filing is the best way to go.
Use Revlon's disposable files made for weak nails. File in one direction only. Start on one side and file towards the middle, then go to the other side and file towards the middle of your nail. Smooth the nail into a squoval that mirrors you cuticle or the shape of the white part of your nail bed.
Finish the edges of the nail with a hindo stone, a smooth ceramic/stone nail file or the finest grit nail file you can find. You want to make the edges really smooth.
Also, avoid using metal nail files. I recommend using disposable nail files and changing them frequently. The fresher the grit, the less the drag which leads to tearing and peeling.
Some people swear by glass nail files but they can shatter if dropped.
I also use a cuticle balm or nail oil to moisturize my nails and protect them from water since I wash my hands frequently.

Takes practice. Also need emery board that's coarse for first smoothing then finer to get nail smoother, Then I use sanding blocks to get real smooth and polish.
Go to a salon and watch They have a bad habit of not putting primer on whole nail when they do a fill and that causes fungus growth. That's another reason I do it myself. Also, I got fed up with them not shaping the end the way I want and seemed to laugh, speaking to each other in their language, when I tried to show them with a drawing. I've had the green fungus and the yellow one from them. If you aren't comfortable doing this, it only costs like $10 at PetsMart and you don't need an appointment, they accept walk-ins for that.
Also, a nice walk on the pavement every day is generally enough to file them down and keep them healthy too and clip less often, or with some dogs not at all.

But most dogs, especially ones that are kept indoors most of the time, need nail trims because if you do not trim at least once a month, their nails would eventually curl around back into their toes resulting in an ingrown toenail, which is very painful. Besides the obvious health reasons it also looks better to have a neatly groomed dog or puppy!!

I'm assuming by nail trimmer you mean a type of ';clipper'; with two metal pieces that come together around the nail (sort of like human nail clippers). There isn't an exact way to ';do it'; but be sure if you plan on doing this yourself that you are able to control your dog from movement (this will result in you undoubtedly cutting too short/crooked) and that you can locate the ';quick';. This is very clear in light colored nails, black nails it will be harder to locate. If you cut that, the nail will bleed. You can buy what is called ';quick stop'; if you do cut it too close.
Personal recommendation: I work at a vet's office, and after all the supplies you have to buy, the struggle with the dog, and the likliehood that you will cut their quick at least once every time you trim the nails, take your dog to his vet and they can cut them efficiently and properly in minutes for a small charge. Your groomer can also do it (most include it with their services).
You can also buy what I personally use, called Pedi Paws, which files the nail so no risk of cutting and bleeding. Its available at walgreens for around $20.00

I got one of those new PETICURE things and it works great! I am too afraid of hurting my boys so I gave up trying. I used to have to keep a lit candle around when I did it in case it bled to stop the flow. Now I just use that thing. It's worth the money, trust me. Good luck!!! DOGS RULE!!!

How long can you leave acrylic nails on?
I have had my nails on for a month now, and I get the feeling I'm going to have to have them taken off, and then reapplied. Is this normal? I'm not sure how they cut my natural nail that is almost as long as my fake. It just takes constant willpower to stop biting your nails. You need to be aware of each time that you feel like biting your nails, and figure out in that situation something else you can do instead. For example, each time that you feel like biting your nails, take out a nail file and just gently smooth the edge of the nail, and the urge will pass. Also, make sure you are using hand lotion after each time you wash your hands, which will keep your hands and nails moisturized. You should generally keep your nail edges filed smooth, so that there are no little bits that are tempting to start to bite, and there are no rough parts that will snag on things or break off. After a couple of days you will start to see the difference in the health of your nails, and then you just have to keep at it every day. If its really hard for you to stop biting, you can always put aloe on your nails. It has a stong bitter taste that will definately make you stop, and it's a good nail strengther.
As soon as she sees that mommy isn't doing it anymore she won't. Explain to her that mommy is trying to stop and that she must help you to be good. She will enjoy that!!

My husband was a chronic nail biter, too. His trick was to ALWAYS have nail clippers with him. That way if there was the least little temptation to bite (any tiny hangnail), he would clip rather than bite. Worth a try.

We noticed too that our 7 year old son was starting to cooy him with chewing on his nails too so we gave him and embray board. My son is now 9 and still doesnt bite his nails. We go through alot of embray boards in this house, but its alot better then chewing on your nails..lol

So she made me drink 1 - 3 glasses of milk a day (i love milk so its all good :P) and after about 2 weeks they were slowly going and by the middle of the next month they had gone.
Lets say about a month and a half of drinking 1 - 3 half pint glasses and they should just go.

I'm assuming by nail trimmer you mean a type of ';clipper'; with two metal pieces that come together around the nail (sort of like human nail clippers). There isn't an exact way to ';do it'; but be sure if you plan on doing this yourself that you are able to control your dog from movement (this will result in you undoubtedly cutting too short/crooked) and that you can locate the ';quick';. This is very clear in light colored nails, black nails it will be harder to locate. If you cut that, the nail will bleed. You can buy what is called ';quick stop'; if you do cut it too close.
Personal recommendation: I work at a vet's office, and after all the supplies you have to buy, the struggle with the dog, and the likliehood that you will cut their quick at least once every time you trim the nails, take your dog to his vet and they can cut them efficiently and properly in minutes for a small charge. Your groomer can also do it (most include it with their services).
You can also buy what I personally use, called Pedi Paws, which files the nail so no risk of cutting and bleeding. Its available at walgreens for around $20.00

So what I do is I hold him back a little on his leash while I walk him - and he likes to investigate stuff, so he PULLS hard. I just let him file his nails on the sidewalk while I walk him. Works pretty good. Concrete acts like sandpaper on his nails and files them down quickly.
I got one of those new PETICURE things and it works great! I am too afraid of hurting my boys so I gave up trying. I used to have to keep a lit candle around when I did it in case it bled to stop the flow. Now I just use that thing. It's worth the money, trust me. Good luck!!! DOGS RULE!!!

I have had my nails on for a month now, and I get the feeling I'm going to have to have them taken off, and then reapplied. Is this normal? I'm not sure how they cut my natural nail that is almost as long as my fake. I' ve had mine on for about 10 years, my mom is also a nail tech,,,(she doesn't do mine) she lives to far,,,however, if your going to a good reputable place don't worry about it, they will know when to fill and when to replace, relax and get them filled according to how fast your nails grow, i know some of the girls say 2 weeks, I can go 3 and I've actually gone a month a lot and it didn't do anything,,,,,,where you go makes all the difference in the world,,,,,,good luck=)
i have them and i get the filled every 2 weeks. a month is way too long to wait so you are probably gonna have to get them taken off and reapplied. get them done every 2 weeks and you wont have to get them taken off for a longg time.
you can leave them of for aslong as they will stay on :)
I have new ones put on every few months just because my actual nail starts peeling away from underneath.

The standard practice is for them to ask you if you would like them trimmed down. If they forget to ask, then you should let them know. It isn't asking too much at all. I think it just slipped your nail technician's mind. Also, and this is going to sound a bit strange they sometimes make assumptions based on ethnicity. I'm white and for better or worse I look and act the 'sterotypical' part. Regardless of where I go the nail technicians assume I want pink french manicures squared off and on the shorter side. One of my best friends is black and when we get our nails done together, she has to ask them to trim her nails. It seems like many nail technicians expect her to want them longer. Yes, please ask them to trim them down to the length you like and that you can easily work with while on the phone or the computer.
Please be sure the sanding band they use to shape the acrylic after the fill is a 'new' one and that the nail station is clean. When you remove acrylics and reapply a new set, please tell the tech not to rough up your natural nail with the drill. The nails will stick with just using the glue. Many Vietnamese shop techs do this and it does damage the nail bed. Also, when getting a pedicure, I would recommend not having the cryo blade used on your feet. It removes calluses but also good tissue and thins the bottom of your feet. You may have problems when you're older if you have this type of technique used on your feet. And please do not shave your legs before you go to avoid getting an infection should the pedicure bowl not be disinfected properly in between clients and at the end of each work day.

If its really hard for you to stop biting, you can always put aloe on your nails. It has a stong bitter taste that will definately make you stop, and it's a good nail strengther.
As soon as she sees that mommy isn't doing it anymore she won't. Explain to her that mommy is trying to stop and that she must help you to be good. She will enjoy that!!

My husband was a chronic nail biter, too. His trick was to ALWAYS have nail clippers with him. That way if there was the least little temptation to bite (any tiny hangnail), he would clip rather than bite. Worth a try.

You could use the gross-tasting nail stuff, but if you want to try something less drastic, treat yourself to a fancy manicure. Not fake nails, just polish. Every time you start to bite your nails, think about how pretty they look and how you don't want to ruin them.

My husband had a bad problem with biting his nails especially when he was stressed. Then one day a gay friend of his made a suggestion to him. get some embary boards. When you notice that your starting to bite your nails use them to file down your nails. For him it worked wonders. We noticed too that our 7 year old son was starting to cooy him with chewing on his nails too so we gave him and embray board. My son is now 9 and still doesnt bite his nails. We go through alot of embray boards in this house, but its alot better then chewing on your nails..lol

I used to bite my nails. I just had to make myself stop everytime I put my fingers by my mouth. Eventually my nails grew out a little and having my nail bitten off actually irritated the skin right under where the nail grows out. I just don't bit them anymore. I wanna say I stopped around 19 years old.
Use nail bite, its this nasty tasting liquid you put on your fingers, but unforrtunately it does also tend to get into food, but at least your daughter will be picking up a healthier habit! Good luck.

I had one in the car, one in the purse, one in every room of the house. If I had the urge to bite then I would use the nail file instead. I have found that if I keep my nails in good shape and rounded then I don't have the urge to bite them. It's when they have a little edge on them that annoys me I feel the need to bite them until they are even. That's why the nail file helps.

dip them in rubbing alcohol and when you try to bite them you will get that awful taste in your mouth and stop. well good luck :)

you can buy a product to paint on the nails, that tastes really bad. Look at Sally Beauty or similar store. Also, it may help you stay away to know......that there are MILLIONS of BACTERIA that are sitting under your nails. Every time you bite your nails, you are putting the bacteria directly into your mouth. Its a gross throught, but anything you touch, can end up in your mouth, including fecal matter- the very thought alone made me stop biting my nails. Good luck

What colour should I paint my nails?
Today I am wearing a black shirt, a black and white houndstooth print mini skirt, and hot pink leggins, with a hot pink studded belt over my shirt. And black hightops. and maybe a fedora, I havn't decided yet.

Most likely this is more of a fidgety habit for you than anything. Fidgeting can be a reaction to stress or nervousness, or it could just be an energetic nervous system that makes you feel as though you need to be engaged in some sort of activity, no matter how large or small, at all times. Hands are the prime tool for people who fidget. You can pick something up like a small rubber ball, roll it around in your hands, toss it, catch it, set it back down and then your hands are free to move on to something else to explore and play with. You couldn't do that with your mouth very easily. And, of course, what better for you to fidget and play with but your own opposite hand. They're always there for when there is nothing else close by to play with.
Now, if your nails are peeling as though they're very brittle and you're essentially tearing off the thin layers, then the first step is to get your nails healthy again. Which means a strengthening and nourishing clear coat nail polish. Having taken the time initially to paint your nails, you should be more reluctant to ruin that. And by using a clear coat instead of a color, when the polish does start to chip slightly, it won't be very visible like it would be if there was a chip of color missing. So by not being able to see the first signs of chipping polish very clearly, you'll be less tempted to want to sit and pick it all off. (to keep polish from chipping as easily, when you want to nearly wrap the polish over the front edge of the nail and continue it slightly under the front edge. That way the final edge of the polish won't be hit very much). If you are biting your nails, this same approach will work.
Being that you are so accustomed to using your hands to fidget with, you just need to find something else to keep them busy so that you don't go back to picking and/or biting your nails. In fact, make sure that there are always at least 2 or 3 different things you could do at any time to keep your hands busy enough to resist the urge to pick. For example, part of using the nail polish is to regain the strength and moisture in your nails, returning them to how they should be. Once your nails are smooth and shiny with no peeling, you'll find it harder and harder to believe that you used to pick at them. Well, to go along with pretty nails, your hands need to be soft and smooth. Keep a small bottle of lotion handy (not too greasy since it will end up all over yoru hands) and when you start to fell the urge to pick, just spend a couple of minutes rubbing some lotion into your hands, between your fingers, and even up your arms a bit. If you enjoy things like knitting or crocheting, those are both good to do to occupy your hands. Or if you want to get a little brain stimulation at the same time, try getting some mind teaser games, like a rubics cube, one of those metal puzzles where there's a ring caught seemingly impossible to get off the tangle it's in, and you have to figure out how to do it. There's even those great crossword and mind teaser books. All kinds of different games and puzzles to keep your mind thinking of other things. Do the dishes. Build things out of toothpicks and glue. Make shadow puppets.
You're still going to have the habit of needing to play with, pick at, or mess up something just for the sake of doing it. It's just a matter of realizing that you have a choice each time that urge hits you to do anything you want.How do i stop picking my nails?

a good way to stop picking ur nails is by getting acrylic nails on so that way thier is nothing to bite or pick.i told my friend to do that and it worked,because she picked her nails and bit them.
My sister had the same problem girl. Try going to CVS or Rite-aid, look in the nail polish section. They have this clear pinkish nail polish that is for nailbiters. It helps your nails grow but also when you go to bite them you get a nasty bitter taste in your mouth. It should help!
Putting nail polish on my nails or dipping my finger in nail polish remover, I found it best for me because it taste really nasty...

Or if you want to get a little brain stimulation at the same time, try getting some mind teaser games, like a rubics cube, one of those metal puzzles where there's a ring caught seemingly impossible to get off the tangle it's in, and you have to figure out how to do it. There's even those great crossword and mind teaser books. All kinds of different games and puzzles to keep your mind thinking of other things. Do the dishes. Build things out of toothpicks and glue. Make shadow puppets.

My sister had the same problem girl. Try going to CVS or Rite-aid, look in the nail polish section. They have this clear pinkish nail polish that is for nailbiters. It helps your nails grow but also when you go to bite them you get a nasty bitter taste in your mouth. It should help!

OMG I used to do the same thing, but I stopped when I covered up my ratty bitten up nails with those fake acrylic nails (you can get them really cheap-like $5 at CVS or any drugstore) I got a size petite,then I filed them down a little bit (but kept them long enough that they still covered my other nails) and left them on for a little more than a week, then replaced them. When I took them off, my nails were longer and looked so nice I was motivated not to bite them anymore. I hope it works for you too! Oh, and you can also strenghthen your nails and help them grow faster with clear nail polish. Good luck:)

I've learned to use rugg gloves when doing house work... also... any kind of oil will lift them (oils in tuna, cooking oils, hands in hamburg, etc). first of all u cut them to normal size and then u shape them and then file but u have to file in only 1 direction to stop chipping.

Also, it may help you stay away to know......that there are MILLIONS of BACTERIA that are sitting under your nails. Every time you bite your nails, you are putting the bacteria directly into your mouth. Its a gross throught, but anything you touch, can end up in your mouth, including fecal matter- the very thought alone made me stop biting my nails. Good luck
