What do those white bits on my nails mean?

Are they from a calcium or zinc deficiency, or do they appear when i bang my hand on something?

my friend thinks it's zinc, and i think it's the knocking against something theory.

please help!!What do those white bits on my nails mean?
White spots on nails are not caused by calcium deficiency. It is more likely that these spots, or leukonychia, are calcium deposits caused by hitting your nail at its base or matrix. Because a normal fingernail takes about eight months to grow out completely, the mark might not appear for several months: if you see white spots halfway up your nail, the damage probably happened around four months earlier.

White spots can also be due to dehydration 鈥?simply not drinking enough water or using a nail polish remover with too much formaldehyde or toluene. Other causes include allergy to nail products used, a fungal infection or mild zinc deficiency caused by changing hormone levels, colds or viral infections.

If you want strong, healthy nails, be sure that your diet is rich in vitamins A, B, C, D, E and iron, calcium, zinc and sulphur, as well as the essential fatty acids. What do those white bits on my nails mean?
I have the same problem and I asked someone the same thing and they told me that I wasn't drinking enough water. They said sometimes it's caused by milk and some times it's caused by water. If you drink alot of milk then they are caused by water, but if you drink alot of water then they are caused by milk.
cocaine traces
it could be a defisiency if you have them on many nails. Or it could be where you've knocked your nail, trapped in door etc... an old bruise on a nail often leaves white marks.
Its calcium so drink lots of milk! But it could be due to a hard knock too!
It usually means a trauma to the nail bed, generally caused by a knock or bang to the nail. It can also be hereditary. The idea that you are deficient in something is not true.
its calcium deficiency just drink loadz of milk n eat lotz of dairy products soon they will disappear
it sounds like a deficiency. look at your diet to see what you're not eating or get some suppliments
It's Leukonychia a medical term for white discoloration appearing on nails. The most common cause is injury to the base of the nail (the matrix) where the nail is formed.
i agree with you i read in a beauty book that hitting your nail up against something hard will leave a white mark...one time i got my nails done and my nails hit up on a wall and 3 of my fingers had white marks...hope this helps you out
Thin, peeling nails, or nails with white spots or ridges, mean your body is running short of zinc. You should incorporate more legumes, beans, mushrooms, brewer's yeast, and whole grains into your meals.
Calcium!!!
the big white bit is an air bubble and the white dots are calcium deficiency :-)
How much calcium you are getting, and when they arre bang real hard against something.
White spots on the fingernails are often a sign of zinc deficiency.
Calcium I used to get them when I didn't drink milk.
those annoying white dots on your nails are nothing to worry about they are just a calcium build up!! it is no big deal and when your nails grow out they will grow out also!! so don't stress it is not a problem, just annoying
its from a calcium deficiency
It means low calcium. Good luck
ok... if u talk about the white lines that happen in the middle of the nail and take forever to get rid of its where the nail has bent up at some point in time. however you can have problems with deficiency as well.
drink milk, eat chees and have some broccilli
alot of people used to say that to me but its not true and the white marks appear after knockin the nail
Hi,

These can be caused by a zinc, iron or calcium deficiency. Go to your Dr and see if you're anaemic.
